The laptop has a sturdy build with a plastic body but is still somewhat on the heavier side. The 15.6-inch screen is not the brightest but it gets the work done. It has a native resolution of 1366×768 and an average sharpness and image quality. The CQ56-109WM comes with onboard Intel GMA 4500M graphics solution with up to 797MB of shared memory. This much graphics is enough for most online video streaming services and local video files.

The keyboard is somewhat in between Chiclet style and traditional keys. It is a conventional 101 key layout. It has a standard touchpad with a two-button setup and a dedicated on/off button. It has 2-way scrolling support as well, which makes it easier to work with documents and websites.

The CQ56 comes with Wireless-N high-speed WiFi support and also with backwards compatibility at 802.11b/g/n. Other than that, there’s an integrated microphone, a Kensington lock and it also supports 3rd party security locks. There’s also a VGA out for those who want to use an external display. It has USB 2.0 ports, 10/100 Ethernet and a SuperMulti DVD burner that supports reading and burning dual layer DVD’s (DVD DL).

The 6-cell 47WH battery should last you about 4-5 hours depending on the usage. It can last even longer if you switch off the wireless networking unless you are playing movies or doing other processor intensive work.

Overall, the buyers who expected it to be their regular workhorse for surfing and office tasks have been satisfied with the budget CQ56-109WM. It has a very good price to performance ratio, especially if you do not mind buying a laptop with an old generation processor. One common caveat is that the screen is not very bright but since this is not oriented towards multimedia, that is forgivable. The 15inch screen provides for good screen space for reading and working on documents and spreadsheets. Music and video playback is also decent.
